Bill Moran is recognized as the grandfather of American custom knifemaking and the founding father of the American Bladesmith Society. He started pounding steel, making knives more than fifty years ago. If you're lucky enough to find a custom-made Moran to buy, expect to shell out five-figures, minimum. Being underwater changes your perspective by letting you to enter another world. Safely doing that requires the right equipment and divers and paddlers agree knives are essential gear. Serviceable water knives are a dime a dozen but finding one that doesn’t rust and stays quick-cutting sharp makes a good water knife a great water knife.

Spyderco’s Caspian Salt fixed blade water knives fall into the later category. They are a solid piece of non-rusting H-1 steel. The industry’s new wunderkind for watery applications, H-1 is nitrogen based instead of carbon based. Carbon rusts, but nitrogen doesn’t because it doesn’t interact with chloride.

Metallurgy lesson aside the knives are built around needs of people who sport in water. The Caspian comes with cutouts lessening weight with a round cutout hole fitting the index finger (even gloved) like a ring. Once gripped, dropping the knife is next to impossible without fully opening your hand. The index finger hole keeps the knife tucked deep in the palm freeing fingertips and thumb for adjusting gear, picking things up and generating leverage. The handle’s solid portion is overlaid in fiberglass reinforced nylon and above the index finger hole is texturing that work together to make it even grippier- a positive feature in cold or moving water.

Fred Perrin is a Parisian custom knifemaker, a former French Army Commando and a world ranked martial artist. His Street Beat fixed-blade knife reflects all three influences. Handle and blade are roughly equal weight. Where they join is a deep finger choil doubling as a hand guard. This spot marks the location of a balance point, sometimes referred to as a sweet-spot, making the knife noticeably responsive in the hand. It’s constructed from a full-length piece of steel set between Micarta handle scales. The scales are double pinned, expanding three-dimensionally on both ends offering the hand exceptional grip. The VG-10 clip point blade is double flat-ground with crosshatching called jimping on its spine that creates texture therefore tactile resistance against the skin of the hand and keeping the knife firmly in grip. Kydex sheath included.

A Major in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division contacted Spyderco sourcing a better knife for their Jumpmasters. More than a few of their crew already carry Spydercos and were familiar with our serrations and manufacturing quality standards.

When jumping out of a plane, airborne servicemen are attached to a static line, jumping one per second with a Jumpmaster insuring they get out and are clear of the plane and next jumper. If someone doesn’t clear because of equipment failure or just poor luck, the Jumpmaster is ready with a reliable cutting tool. Once clear of the aircraft jumpers still need a reliable and quick-cutting blade in case they need to cut themselves free.

The Army’s 82nd Airborne set out what they wanted in a knife and Spyderco complied by making the Spyderco Jumpmaster fixed blade. Their wish list included a rust-proof hollow-ground H-1 blade with a Sheepfoot (Rescue) profile. The blade comes fully serrated to quickly cut through ropes, lines, webbing or fabric. (Not a collector model.)

The Temperance is a study in control. Its leaf-shaped blade is engineered and primed for rigid treatment. VG-10 stainless blade is full flat-ground to the edge, then we double distal taper the blade, from spine to cutting edge and from nose to tail. All this hampers resistance and friction when cutting, penetrating or slicing. The cocktail of distinctive blade shape, superior steel with a full flat grind, work in concert to create a knife that will stand up to harsh use and remain reliable. The handle is bead-blasted mocha colored canvas Micarta-contour milled into a three dimensional handful of gripping options. Inside, a skeletonized tang runs the full length of the handle. Boltaron sheath with a G-Clip attachment system.
