A Japanese steel foundry recently turned this myth into reality with the introduction of a steel they call H1. H1 is a PH steel meaning it is a precipitation-processed alloy, that's rolled hard without heat-treating and has .1% nitrogen which acts like carbon in the steel matrix, but does not react to chlorine making rust. Yet another addition to Spyderco’s non-rusting Salt Series knife line, the C118 Saver Salt. The blades found on all Salt Series models are made with an alloy called H-1. H-1 is non-rusting premium-performance steel that’s raising interest in fishing, boating and diving circles. Why? Because it cuts for extended amounts of time before needing sharpening and it can’t rust. H-1's edge retention compares to other high carbon knife steels but its most distinguishable characteristic is that its nitrogen based as opposed to carbon based. Carbon is the instigator in creating rust when it reacts to chloride. It’s also what makes a blade hard and stay sharp. Nitrogen also makes steel hard and edge retentive but it doesn’t react with chloride, so it cannot rust. Saver Salt’s Sheepfoot blade is rounded at the tip for cutting around inflatable watercraft, flesh and in emergencies. No pointed tip means no accidental puncturing.

Finally a steel foundry in Japan called Myodo Foundry makes this myth a reality with the introduction of a new steel called H1. H1 steel is a PH steel, meaning it is a precipitation-hardened steel. The Caspian comes with cutouts lessening weight with a round cutout hole fitting the index finger (even gloved) like a ring. Once gripped, dropping the knife is next to impossible without fully opening your hand. The index finger hole keeps the knife tucked deep in the palm freeing fingertips and thumb for adjusting gear, picking things up and generating leverage. The handle’s solid portion is overlaid in fiberglass reinforced nylon and above the index finger hole is texturing that work together to make it even grippier- a positive feature in cold or moving water.
